Ladies and Gentlemen,
I’ve been studying and applying Leadership for my entire career and if it is one thing me and my friends have found when it comes to life changing, transformational leadership, it boils down to being Brilliant in the Basics.
That’s right.
That’s it.
We’re talking:
• Doubling the effectiveness of your team,
• Aligning your people to an inspiring vision,
• Developing amazing trust within your organization, and
• Allowing them the autonomy to be brilliant themselves.
I mean it when I say, we’ve found no “secret” sauce.
There’s no ONE “secret strategy” or “newfound method” that the master leadership Gurus out there are going to teach you to turn your staff into mindless zombies willing to go the extra mile for you.
I say that’s all crap, because TRUE and EFFECTIVE leadership can be found in three to four BASIC principles:
Basic Principle #1 – Overcommunicate your Mission/Vision/Values
What does your team stand for?
What is their “WHY” when it comes to being on the team?
What is a mission statement?
The statements usually start with: “We provide (expert service) to our (target market) by solving (this major problem)” But I encourage you to go deeper.
What makes your service life changing? How should your team feel like they are changing the world – even if they are only flipping burgers at McDonalds?
The point?
If someone walks up to ANY member of your team and asks what they do, they not only should know exactly what they do and how it fits with the overall company mission – but they should UNDERSTAND exactly how their actions tie to the overall outcome.
I’m talking changing this: “I’m an accountant for a large hotel chain…”
To this: “I’m an accountant for Hilton, we make sure the business and cashflow is running smoothly in the back end to make sure our guests have the most amazing experience wherever they stay.”
And to get to that jump it takes OVERCOMMUNICATION.
A slow and steady drumbeat of your mission, vision, values. Say it at the start of every meeting; sign off with it in every company memo; say it daily until your team rolls their eyes and maybe teases you a bit for saying it too much.
…and then keep saying it. 😉
The last analogy I’ll make is it is like watering your lawn – you can’t dump a gallon of water on it one time and hope it grows – you have to water it daily to let the roots REALLY sink in.
Basic Principle #2 – Trust your Team
Ever been the expert on your team? Let’s go back to the accountant example: when a tax or financial situation comes up on the team you are the expert with the most valuable opinion or solution…
…Only to be ignored because the boss didn’t like (or understand) your solution, so they blew you off?
Let’s get basic here: Great leaders trust their people and their experts.
Your team is there to make magic happen for you.
And since you’ve overcommunicated to them what they need to do, it’s time to BUILD Trust and then STEP ASIDE, and let them run the business for you.
Don’t have that level of trust with your team?
Great, go build it! We’ve come up with some pretty specific strategies if you’d like reach out and talk about it (one size advice doesn’t fit all here…)
Basic Principle #3 – Make Timely Decisions
Decisions make money.
Action drives momentum.
As the leader you are EXPECTED – it is YOUR JOB – to make decisions, and brilliant leaders make decisions in an timely manner.
Even when they don’t know what to do…
Even if they are unsure of themselves…
Even if it is an awful choice/situation (think lesser of two evils)…
They are decisive and LEAD the team forward.
Look, we’ve all had boss or supervisor that…just…couldn’t…make…a decision. Remember how frustrating that was?
Indecisiveness is often a symptom of poor confidence – they need “MORE” information to often make the “BEST” decision, and often times personal courage needs to come forward to say:
“I’m making this decision, for better or worse.”
And then the next statement:
“I accept the known and unknown consequences of this decision.”
Because, Leaders, you’re in charge, and the buck stops with you.
Now a disclaimer: This isn’t a license to make rash decisions – you still MUST do your homework. Choices that require layoffs or other serious consequences must be given their absolute day in court, however when it’s time to move…
…You decide and Move out.
Basic Principle #4 – Care
This last one is by far the most important for me, and that is you must CARE.
You must genuinely, deeply CARE for your people, your business, your customers, your mission, your vision, your values – all of it.
Your “give a crap” factor needs to be SUPER high for anyone to get behind you.
This is the hallmark of being inspiring – just ask yourself – "are you WORTH following?"
Do you care enough about your people that you would go the extra mile for them, and more importantly, do they know it?
Wrapping up
I wholeheartedly believe, with 100% conviction, that anyone can master any one if not all four of these basic principles.
And I also believe (again, with 100% conviction) that mastery isn’t required to effectively improve and implement what’s written above.
Now, your Call to Action

It’s worked for me and my clients, so why not give it a click and see what it is all about.
Again this webinar has no obligation, no sales pitch, just an opportunity to pick up a few new tricks.
OR – if you want to skip all that and have a 45 minute breakthrough call with me and my team to help with a specific problem you’re facing feel free to connect with us here and here.
