Learn How To Significantly Increase Your Say-To-Do Ratio
Are you over-committing and/or under executing? How does that make your team feel?
Alright you mathletes, it's time to revisit some basic Algebra today!
"But <[parent]>! Surely I'll NEVER use this in the real world!"
"Wrong! Just look at the latest Momenta Blog post, and stop calling me Shirley." :-)
Today I present to you an extremely simple equation to dramatically increase credibility, accountability, and work velocity.
It's called the Say-to-Do Ratio (yes it's illustrated backwards, put your hand down), and just like I said, it's very very VERY easy to master.
Ready?
STEP 1: When you SAY you will do something - you must then DO it on the appropriate or committed timeline...
The End, there is no STEP 2.
Well, wait.
OPTIONAL STEP 2: Don't over-commit. Sometimes we take on too much which can lead to burnout. If you can't meet that requirement that you're being asked to do I emphatically encourage you to over communicate to the team. You're in it (career, life, relationships) for the long haul, remember?
I said optional because I love it when people accomplish be tasks, sometimes it makes the DO'er get creative and solve that problem/tasker with a completely new and innovative way.
Want Bonus Points? Of course you do, you're a high achiever: Now, make a habit out of DOING more than you SAY you will.
You see how the math works? That's why it should be equal to or greater than.
Can't complete it without examples, Joe:
-"Hey John, I'll get you that report by Friday, end of day..."
-"Yes Boss, I'll finish resume reviews today...."
-"Sure thing honey, I'll finish building your desk this weekend... (this one is for me, and I think she actually reads these things)"
Now.... DO it.
Do it because you committed to doing it. Do it because your team is counting on you to hold up your end of the bargain. When you fail to follow through on these commitments your credibility takes a stark and remarkable nose dive and is significantly difficult to bring back up. If there's something in your way of completing the task then communicate the barrier and request a new deadline - and then the cycle continues.
Questions for reflection:
Q: What do you think your current ratio is? (I know mine could be better.)
Q: How can you commit today to improving it, or helping others improve theirs?
Q: If it WAS better, how would that make you feel? (how about your team/friends/family?)
Thank you for your time today, have a great week!!
Joe
