Like I said above, I'm not a fan (at all) of the "trouble is coming, go buy more toilet paper" mentality. I firmly believe we can plan our way through most risks and a market downturn is a known risk for any business.
Said more directly - Leaders, you've likely seen these seas before. How did you and your company weather the 2008 storm, or the first round of COVID, when the world ground to a screeching halt?
When I was a junior engineer a decade ago one of our civil engineers told me what his private office went through during the 2008 recession - "Joe, the phones just STOPPED ringing. We reached out to all our customers and drummed up whatever business we could, but it wasn't enough."
Businesses like his shrunk, they cut staff and rode out the storm. In an ironic twist, Grant Cardone: Author of "Sell or Be Sold" (check out his "The 10X rule") made a fortune during this time period EXPANDING their reach and influence to take advantage of the uncertainty and less aggressive CEOs. He wrote about it: "When the world is shrinking out of fear that is your window to expand like crazy!" (paraphrased)
So what are YOU going to do about it?
You've got to care for both your work family and your real family.
Now is the perfect time to Level-Up your team.
- How can you prepare them to take advantage of this uncertainty?
- What kind of skills do they need to have?
- What training do they need?
- As their leader are you prepared to LEAD them through whatever lies ahead? (Do you have an executive coach or mentor who's been there before?)
- What are you prepared to do?
- How far will you go to safeguard your team and pivot if necessary?
Disclaimer Again: I don't want to stress you out, rather I want to energize you to take on this challenge and prepare your amazing team for any/all challenges - be they real or perceived.
If you/they need training, go get training.
If you or your staff needs coaching or executive coaching, go find a coach.
Remember - you can't control the market or the economy - but what you CAN control is your attitude and HOW YOU REACT.
