6+ Powerful Tips for more CHARISMA

Joseph Blauwiekel • October 4, 2022

Who's the most charismatic person you know?  Do they fit the below mold?

Big block words saying

Like Who doesn’t want to be charismatic? To be followed? Revered? Appreciated?

But just what the heck is “Charisma” anyway?

From Oxford (google): “Charisma, noun: 1. compelling attractiveness or charm that can inspire devotion in others; 2. A divinely conferred power of talent.

Ooo, number two sounds pretty interesting.

Long it’s been considered and debated that Charisma is more of a born trait – you either had it or you didn’t. However, I disagree and think you could ACTIVELY work on the traits that can ultimately build you more Charisma.

So I broke what I thought made great charisma down into two buckets:

You need to be LIKEABLE, and

You need to be INSPIRING.

Likeable

Be Appreciative – Be thankful and grateful with the people around you.  Saying (and meaning) “thank you” costs you nothing, hardly no energy at all, yet can lead to great impacts. Be thankful of your team and staff when they do good work – heck, even thanking them in advance for showing up with good energy can GIVE someone good energy.

Be Empathetic –You have to care about the people you interact with and one of the best ways is through empathy. When you show empathy (and mean it) you can generate significant and lasting rapport with almost anyone. Remember, when someone tells you a story you don’t always have to interject your opinion- just acknowledging the story is the first step: “wow, that really stinks about your flat tire, I’m sorry to hear that.”

Be Attentive – Eye contact and firm handshakes. When you’re talking to someone think (and then believe) in your mind that this person is the most important person in the room. Become a good listener – no, a GREAT listener – and ask powerful questions. A powerful question is usually open ended and empowers the other person to keep sharing deeper. “Woah, that’s a crazy story – how did you handle that?

Inspiring

Be Confident – Confidence can be a tough one for some. Maybe you didn’t have a supportive childhood or maybe you don’t see your true value – either way – spend some time in this area to radiate more confidence. Think of the most confident person they know – how do they act? Can you emulate it? At any rate, take this reading as a reminder, from me to you, that you are a BADASS and have every reason to be confident. 😉

Have a Vision – We follow inspiring leaders because they sell a vision of the future – “we’re going this way! And it’s going to be amazing when we get there!”  Show your team where they want to go, everyone wants to be part of a community of excellent people doing fantastic work – set that vision and make a plan to get there. Don’t forget to overcommunicate the destination as often as possible.

Take Action – I talk about it all the time so it’s no secret I threw this in here – have you ever followed a statue? Nope, don’t argue, you haven’t – because they don’t MOVE. Being inspiring involves taking confident and inspiring ACTION. Be decisive in your actions, lead with a purpose (you know, because you’re confident and know exactly what you want to happen 😉)

You want a BONUS you say?!

Be Vulnerable – Share your true self whenever you can. If you’re uncomfortable or nervous it’s okay to share these thoughts and feelings at select moments. Don’t be afraid to let others see the REAL you from time to time – this makes you more relatable and approachable – “hey, they’re just like us!” Treat this like seasoning, a little can go a long ways – and too much vulnerability may have an inverse affect. If it feels like a good time to share, go for it. 😊
