Like many new and stalwart Entrepreneurs out there - I'm building a new business. (you may have noticed it here on this page 😀)
I also have MANY ideas that I would love to act on:
-I have a book idea I'd like to pursue,
-I have a bucket list I want to ACTIVELY plan to check off,
-I have fitness goals I (really should) give more priority, and
-I have bigger, bolder actions I want to take with Momenta. (of course the list goes on)
In short, I've got life to live.
("Don't we all?")
So what's in MY way for some of these goals?
For me there is an element of fear baked into some of them.
1. "What if I try it and I don't like it?"
2. "What if it doesn't work - or doesn't sell?"
3. "What if I'm really bad at it?" (answer: of course you suck at it, you haven't done it before...)
4. "What if it takes off and I can't keep up with it?"
5. "What action can I take that would be perfectly NAIL what I'm trying to accomplish?"
All of these tap into some fears. I wouldn't call them deep fears, some of these concerns are pretty shallow.
So the thought this week as a call to action was this: "When is your WANT going to overcome your FEAR?"
I WANT to do these things, I really do.
So how do I get around these fears?
Try reframing the statement:
1. "What if I try it and I don't like it?"
Reframe: This fear can be tied to the Sunk Cost Fallacy where I'm worried about the retrospective cost. As a positive flip - I won't know if I like it unless I try it. So why not? Said differently: "Well Joe, what if you DID like it?"
2. "What if it doesn't work - or doesn't sell?"
Reframe: The journey of building anything from scratch is always littered with failures - and I'd wager every business on the planet has had failures. Why on earth would I be immune? Positive spin - the faster we fail and learn what DOESN'T work - the faster we can get to a better method. Want a better question?: "What if it DID work?"
3. "What if I'm really bad at it?" (referring to a hobby or maybe putting yourself out there)
Reframe: Of course you're bad at it! You may have never done it before!! Self-coaching chitchat: "Have you dedicated hours or years to that practice to achieve mastery? No... Then yeah your first few times may be a bit uncomfortable."
4. "What if it takes off and I can't keep up with it?"
First celebrate: "Holy cow! That's fantastic! You tried something and it worked!! Congratulations!"
Reframe: You are still in control! You own the actions. If you need to throttle back to stay in balance then you can DO that! Isn't it great that you have control over how you run your schedule? 😉
5. "What action can I take that would be perfectly NAIL what I'm trying to accomplish?"
Reframe: "Is there such thing as a perfect action?" Sure we work with a mentor that would lay out a roadmap of perfect steps to take - but you might not be doing that. So unless you're going to pursue that Mentor to help lay out the path before you - you're going to have to take action. Overthinking can lead to paralysis, when sometimes we just need to step into that uncertainty. Better question: "What's the cost of pursuing the 'perfect plan'?"
So there you have it.. When you're stuck try and reframe the situation in a more positive light and ask yourself "how" these fears are holding you back.
Bonus: The MRS. just came in and shared how inaction and overthinking may be due to low frontal lobe activity. Simple solution? Physical activity. Don't things feel so much more clear after a nice walk?
On that note - it's time for my walk. I hope you all can crush through some fears of you own today and realize that they're really not that scary when you reframe them and think differently. If you need help -
