The Momentum Series - Nine Essential Elements To Become Unstoppable

Joseph Blauwiekel • July 9, 2022

Welcome to the Momentum Series - a deep dive of each topic is coming to my BMC page.

A large Venn diagram with Momentum in the middle of nine smaller circles.

Which would you rather be? An Immovable Object -or- and Unstoppable Force?

I think you can probably deduce what I would pick: to be #unstoppable.

Unstoppable: to be impossible to stop or prevent, to be relentless, indomitable, unconquerable. To be of such force, momentum, and magnitude that no other entity can slow you down.

Sounds pretty cool right?

There are untold numbers of people on this planet to have achieved such a status in their everyday actions – look at business magnates (Musk, Bezos), look at political leaders (Merkel, Trudeau, Obama, Trump), look at Cinderella sports teams, major influencers, actors, activists, and more.

In almost all cases these individuals developed their own version of unstoppable momentum to achieve their level of success.

So I’ve spent some time developing what I think are nine essential attributes to achieve #unstoppable momentum. If you have a good handle on most of these, I think your chances of success are Very High.

I’ll be going over each of these in detail over different posts for my members with an audio discussion as well on my BuyMeACoffee page. I hope we all learn something together on this journey. But for now, let’s dig in!

So LET’S GET AFTER IT (in no particular order):

1. Culture- “Culture eats Strategy for breakfast.” -Peter Drucker, notable Management and Leadership consultant. What is culture? What’s YOUR (or your teams) culture? To me culture is a lot like character – it’s your character and that of your team or office. It’s the actions you/they take when no one is looking. So if you have a strategy to do accomplish something great – I challenge you to analyze your character and the culture around you – is it symbiotic?

2. Decisiveness- “In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing. The worst thing you can do is nothing.” Theodore Roosevelt. Make no mistake, success belongs to those that take action. Do you have the ability to take the leap – especially when the options aren’t perfect?  Can you seize the initiative?

3. Small Simple Steps- “How do you eat an elephant?” (What a strange concept, who would eat an elephant? Maybe a Bison? Let’s try again.)  “How do you eat a Bison???” One bite at a time, of course. The secret to taking action, and taking Massive Action, is to break it down into small simple steps. Jim Kwik (Limitless) coined the three S’s. If your goal is big and scary (awesome 😊 ) then we break it down into bite sized pieces. The more we knock out the closer we get to the goal, and since they’re simple, they can be energy-proof, meaning even with low energy we can still accomplish something small towards our goal – keep the flywheel turning.

4. Mindset- The research is clear: those with a positive mindset, and those that seek or create opportunities for growth get further, faster. Carol Dweck (Mindset: The New Psychology of Success) brilliantly researched and differentiated the difference between a Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset. You know a fixed mindset when you see one, in fact when you start looking you’ll find them everywhere. Do you have the mindset – or know how to shift your mindset – to overcome any challenge?

5. Persistence- Brick by Brick, post by post, sales call after sales call, meeting after meeting. The iterative loop of success is astounding, frustrating, and ultimately predictable for success. It takes time to build up to Critical Mass – a nuclear engineering term denoting the amount of material necessary to cause a chain reaction. One proton breaks another atom, and then proceeds to break another, and so on. Yet we don’t reach Critical Mass overnight, and the first turn of the flywheel is the hardest, however by the 100th turn the great machine takes over.

6. Passion – Do you have it?... That fire in your chest that drives you? That feeling that makes you jump out of bed to do the things you want to do? It makes you say – “I can’t wait to…” As conventional wisdom dictates: “do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”. Personally I’d change “work” to “toil” because all great things require work. It’s my passion to discuss these topics in the hopes it provides someone the right insight at the right time to change the world.

7. Habits- From James Clear (Atomic Habits), Charles Duhigg (The Power of Habit), to Darren Hardy (The Compound Effect) there are thousands of writers and researchers devoted to the advancement of humankind through a foundation of excellent habits, and a person’s success can be predicted based on their daily routines and habits. Both good and bad habits can be quite powerful – smoking is an excellent example of a bad habit, just a recurring exercise routine can be equally transformative in the opposite spectrum. The question is: do you have the right habits in place to meet your goals?

8. Vision – What’s your Endstate? What does “success” look like? What is the destination at the end of this journey? For your business it may be something like: “To be the #1 recognized <business entity> in the <pick area of influence>”, or “…deliver an outstanding <product/service> while keeping our team healthy, engaged, and hungry for more”, or “Build our platform to 100M subscribers to better spread our message of love and joy.”

9. Patience – I’m glad this one is last (seriously, it happened by accident). Patience is key, it takes time to bake a cake, paint a masterpiece, build a house, build a Legacy! Think about it, the pyramids took centuries to build, take a moment with me to marvel that the Egyptians had such patience knowing that their vision may not be completed until far after themselves, and likely their children had passed on?

So what do you think? What’s missing here?

I absolutely love this topic and truly believe that many of these singularly can give anyone a good bump of motivation or something to work on – however when all combined the synergy created can make you… you guessed it… #unstoppable.
